Music
I’ve moved to hosting the actual mp3 downloads of my music to bandcamp. It takes the burden of hosting the files off of me, and handles things like transcoding the file into a variety of formats automatically.
I like to create electronic music on the computer. Although I have tried various music tracking and creation programs, my favorite one is most likely Reason by Propellerhead Software. It is a full featured music tracking program and effects rack. That is, you have a rack upon which you can place virtual audio devices such as mixers, synthesizers, samplers, sequencers, effects, etc. You can even view it from the back and rewire the devices exactly how you want them to be, which allows for an enormous amount of flexibility when creating various audio effects.
I’m pretty crappy at it right now, but I hope to get better as I practice more.
Title: Synchronous
Album: One Night Drunk Songwriting Experiments
Genre: House
This is a cheesy house song that I feel is pretty mediocre. I banged it out in one night while drunk, but rather than scrap it, I’m releasing it with that disclaimer. Hence, the album title. Mostly just a short cheesy oldschool house song, maybe with a tiny bit of Orbital influence.
Title: Snow
Version: Gamma
Genre: Electronica
This is another song with simple floating melodies but complex beats, like Evening Stars. The whistling melodies are inspired by such songs as bad loop’s “lumme” and the Metroid Prime Phendrana Drifts theme, and the drums are inspired by artists such as Squarepusher and Venetian Snares.
This song is incomplete, and is being released as such with a version, since it could be superseded by a newer version in the future. The version of this release is Gamma (Alpha and Beta versions are unreleased). The song is too short, the structure, melodies, and effects are not final, and it has not been mastered. Just something to keep in mind.
I’ve arranged my first six released songs into a sort of impromptu album arrangement. It’s called Pi E Phi. Pi, E, and Phi, are three of the most important mathematical constants, corresponding to:
Pi – the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter
e – the unique real number where the derivative of e^x at x=0 is 1
Phi – the golden ratio
You’ll notice that, if you pronounce the “phi” as “fee”, the way it’s pronounced in Greek (as opposed to the English “fai” pronunciation) it also sounds like “Pi EP”. This is technically an EP since there are too few songs to be a real album.
Title: Dreamscape
Album: Pi E Phi
Track: 1 of 5
Genre: Downtempo
This is probably my first fully completed song. It is mostly relaxed and downtempo. It is supposed to represent a dreamscape – that is, it feels like you’re taking a stroll through someone’s pleasant fantasy dream.
Title: Freeform
Album: Pi E Phi
Track: 2 of 5
Genre: Downtempo/Breakbeat
This song is a little strange. The beat/ambience are downtempo with a little breakbeat influence in the beat, but the melody is not really something you hear in downtempo songs. It sounds a little disjoint at first, but it ends up kind of catchy.
Title: Afternoon Cigarette
Album: Pi E Phi
Track: 3 of 5
Genre: Downtempo
This track is short and simple; it’s only about 2 minutes long. It sounds like a chill tune that I’d hear in my head in the afternoon while having a cigarette, so…
Title: Transistors
Album: Pi E Phi
Track: 4 of 5
Genre: Chemical
I wasn’t entirely sure how to classify this song, so I labeled it as “Chemical” since it uses a couple chemical-style beats. It’s mostly a normal techno song, with a few beeps and nanoloop beats, earning it its name.
Title: Evening Stars
Album: Pi E Phi
Track: 5 of 5
Genre: Drum & Bass
This is a drum and bass song with a gentle melody laid on top. Most of the variation is in the varied drum sequences from measure to measure – think “Squarepusher” and songs like “Beep Street”. It has a peaceful ambience, kind of like looking at stars at night.
